Step-by-Step Guide: Cloning Your Digital Self
So, for the first part of this tutorial, I’m going to show you exactly how you can clone yourself using this fantastic tool. First, take a look at this short 10-second clip showcasing my own digital clone. Then, I’ll walk you through all the essential details and knowledge you need to create your own.
(Mention of the 10-second clip)
As you just saw, creating a digital clone is not only cool but incredibly realistic! This powerful technique can fundamentally automate your entire content creation process by eliminating the need to be physically on camera. For more in-depth strategies on optimizing and automating your YouTube content workflow, don’t forget to explore the YT SHORTS AUTOMATION course available within our Youtube content creation category on Up Skiill.
Alright, now that you’ve witnessed the impressive realism, let’s get started and create your very first digital clone together.
Navigating to the Avatar Creation Section
To begin, navigate to the “avatars” section located on the left-hand side of the HeyGen interface. Simply click on it. Once you do, a dedicated section will open up. While HeyGen offers a variety of pre-designed avatars, which we’ll explore further in Step 2, our current focus is on creating a clone of yourself. To do this, click on the “Create New Avatar” button located here.
Choosing the Hyper-Realistic Avatar Option
On the next screen, you’ll be presented with several options. To create a realistic clone of yourself, it’s crucial to select the “hyper-realistic Avatar” option. Go ahead and click on that. You’ll then be greeted by a brief message from HeyGen’s CEO, Joshua. Feel free to listen, or simply click to proceed. Now, you need to decide between “still” or “motion.” If you’re aiming for an avatar similar to mine – simply sitting and talking – then “still” is the appropriate choice. However, if you envision your avatar in more dynamic scenarios, like walking, you can opt for “motion.” Later, I’ll show you some examples of motion avatars created by HeyGen. For beginners, I highly recommend starting with “still” as it’s generally easier to create. That’s the option I’ll be using.
Understanding the Recording Instructions
Next, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the recording instructions. HeyGen provides both article and text instructions. To keep things straightforward, I’ll focus on the text instructions. The process is quite simple: you’ll need to provide a 2 to 5 minute long article of yourself speaking. High resolution is key – if your camera or phone supports 4K recording, definitely utilize it. This will result in a more realistic and crisp-looking avatar. Ensure you record in a well-lit and quiet environment, and remember to look directly into the camera, just like my clone does. Importantly, pause between your sentences. These breaks help the AI process your data more effectively, leading to more realistic results. You can use generic gestures, but keep them below chest level. Lastly, avoid stitching any footage together and ensure you have natural pauses in your speech. If any of these points are unclear, feel free to pause the article and review them. Otherwise, let’s move on to the next step.
Uploading Your Recording
The next step involves uploading your recorded footage. While HeyGen offers an option to record directly with your webcam, I strongly advise against it. For optimal quality, use a dedicated camera mounted on a tripod. Built-in webcams typically have lower image quality. Once you have your high-quality recording, simply click on the “upload footage” button.
Confirming Key Recording Criteria
Once your footage is uploaded, you’ll see a screen with several options to tick. HeyGen has made the process user-friendly by outlining the crucial elements for a successful clone:
- Your face is visible at all times.
- You are looking directly into the camera.
- There are pauses between your sentences.
- The environment is well lit and quiet.
Apply simple logic – these are the four essential elements to keep in mind during your recording. Ensure your recording meets these criteria and tick all the corresponding boxes. Additionally, if you recorded in 4K resolution, make sure to select that option at the bottom to preserve the high resolution. Once everything matches, click on “my footage looks good.”
Granting Consent
Next, you’ll need to provide consent, essentially granting AI permission to use your footage. HeyGen offers the option to upload a consent recording from your phone, but I recommend using your webcam for this as the quality isn’t critical here. As you can see in my example, I simply sat and spoke the required sentence to my webcam. The AI processed this in about 15 seconds, and just like that, the consent was submitted. After recording, click “submit.” It takes about 10 to 20 seconds for validation, and then your article begins to upload, which takes a few more minutes. Once uploaded, you’ll see a confirmation screen. Click “done” and then wait an additional 5 to 10 minutes for your Avatar to be processed. Once processing is complete, you can start automating your content creation!
Utilizing Your Cloned Avatar
Let me show you how to use your new clone. If I navigate to “avatars,” you’ll see your processed clone right there. To use it, click on your clone, and then click on it again. Now, click on “create with AI Studio.” You can choose between landscape and portrait quality. Since my original recording was in landscape, I’ll choose that. However, if you’re aiming to automate your Instagram Reels, Shorts, or similar vertical content, that option is also available.
Inside the AI Studio: Scripting Your Avatar
Welcome to HeyGen Studio, where you’ll edit your Avatar. First, it needs a script. There are two main ways to provide a script: you can use the voice that HeyGen cloned along with your visuals. When you uploaded your Avatar, HeyGen not only captured your appearance and gestures but also analyzed your voice and can recreate it. To use this, simply click on the text box, replace the default text with your desired script, and as you can see, the voice is labeled “AI Guy” – that’s my cloned voice. You can also choose from other AI-generated voices or explore the HeyGen Library. However, if you’ve created a clone of yourself, using your own voice makes the most sense, and that’s what I’ll do. This method is fully automated.
Alternatively, you can still use the text input but also upload your own pre-recorded audio. This allows you to record your voiceover separately with a microphone, which can sometimes be easier than recording both audio and article simultaneously. Simply record your audio, upload the file in the “upload audio” section, and HeyGen will process it to create your talking Avatar with your specific voice. For demonstration purposes, I’ll stick with the text-to-speech using my cloned voice.
Once you have your script, you can select your Avatar and adjust its positioning and size as needed. After positioning, you can name your project before exporting. I’ll name this “AI guy” and click “submit.” Here, you’ll find some important export options. If your original recording was in 4K, navigate to the resolution settings and select 4K. Next, I recommend increasing the FPS to 60 for smoother visuals. Finally, you’ll likely want to turn off the watermark located in the bottom right corner. Once these settings are adjusted, click “submit.” The processing will take about five to ten minutes. Here’s a quick look at the result we achieved:

Exploring Viral UGC Models
Now that you know how to generate your own AI clone, let’s explore the incredible UGC actors that HeyGen offers. These are fantastic if you want to run platforms like TikTok, promote products, create ads, or even build a personal brand entirely with AI characters without ever being on camera yourself. I’ve explored many of these, and some are truly outstanding. The most interesting ones I found are in the UGC section.
(Display the UGC model examples)
If you’re looking to create your own AI influencer and prefer to remain completely off-camera, even bypassing the self-cloning process, these UGC models are an amazing alternative. These avatars are based on real human beings, offering a highly realistic look. The process for creating content with these models is very similar to the self-cloning method. Simply click on the model you like, select “create with AI Studio,” and choose your desired orientation (portrait for platforms like Shorts). Once inside the studio, the same techniques apply: either type in your script or upload your own audio. So, if you’re a girl and want to use your own voice with a UGC avatar, you can record your audio, navigate to the script section, click “upload audio,” and upload your voiceover.
Crafting Your Unique Avatar from Scratch
Now that you’ve seen how to create a clone and utilize UGC actors, I want to show you how to create an Avatar that’s entirely unique, similar to my own, all within HeyGen. First, click on “create a new Avatar,” and then select “generate” at the bottom. This allows us to generate an image from the ground up. Next, give your Avatar a name – I’ll stick with “AI guy.” For age, I’ll select “young adult,” and for gender, “man.” For ethnicity, I’ll choose “white.” Now, for the crucial part: describing your Avatar. Here’s the prompt I use (I’ll also include this in the description below, and if it’s not there, just leave a comment!):
AI Guy Style Avatar
Feel free to copy this prompt or use its structure and values as a starting point to create your own unique Avatar. For orientation, I’ll choose “portrait,” and for pose, “upper body” as it’s a typical POV for YouTube content. For style, I prefer to keep it unspecified to allow the AI more creative freedom, but HeyGen does offer specific styles like realistic, cartoonish, and vintage. Once your prompt and settings are in place, click “Generate Preview” to see the results.
(Display the generated Avatar previews)
Here are the generated options. As you can see, they’re not super realistic but rather a bit cartoonish, clearly fictional characters. Some look better than others, and this one in the top right looks great to me. Once you find one you like, click “save.” If not, you can always generate more. I’ll save this one, and it will be added to my library.
Adding a Voice to Your Custom Avatar
Once your Avatar is saved, you have the option to add a voice. Here, HeyGen offers a few interesting possibilities. The first is to have HeyGen design a voice that it believes will match your Avatar based on its algorithms. Let’s take a listen to some of these generated voices:
(Play the examples of AI-generated voices)
Honestly, those sound pretty good, especially considering it only took HeyGen about 30 seconds to match the photo with these voices – that’s incredible! If you like one of these, simply click “Add Voice” to use it. Alternatively, you can clone your own voice, creating a digital version of yourself with a custom-generated visual. This allows you to build a unique personal brand with a distinct look and voice.
The remaining voice customization feature is “smart voice match,” which allows you to choose a voice from HeyGen’s pre-existing library. However, I recommend either using a HeyGen-designed voice or, even better, cloning your own voice. For voice cloning, a decent quality microphone is advisable. While mine isn’t top-of-the-line, it gets the job done. If you’re using a low-quality microphone like your phone’s, the designed voices might be a better option. For the sake of this demonstration, I’ll choose a random voice to complete the Avatar. And just like that, our custom Avatar is ready to use! You already know the drill – click “create with studio” to start working with your new Avatar.
(Demonstrate using the custom Avatar with text-to-speech)
To test it out, I’ll give it a few random sentences, the same ones I used at the beginning of this article. Let’s generate and take a quick look at the result:
